Because of Hurricane Irma, the Halifax Humane Society has had a slew of new arrivals, filling the center to capacity.
HHS is calling out to all potential adopters and foster parents to lend a hand in taking care of the animals in the shelter, due to low adoption rates.
They are also urging people not to abandon their pets at this time. Barry KuKes, community outreach director for HHS, said they are experiencing many people surrendering their pets to their care as well as smaller shelters transferring animals.
“We want to remind people that they should not abandon their pets," KuKes said in a press release. "Their evacuation planning should include the needs of their pets including food, medications, travel items like crates, etc. There are many pet friendly hotels and
shelters."
He added pets can evacuate with you at pet-friendly shelters. Here's a list of all the shelters in Volusia.
KuKes also reminded people not to tie their pets to a fence or lock them in an outdoor pen without the ability to escape driving rains, winds and possible major flooding.
"Your pet wouldn’t abandon you at your time of need; give your pet the same courtesy and care,” KuKes said.
HHS remain open 10-6 p.m., Saturday, and 10-2 p.m., Sunday. Monday hours are dependent on when and how Hurricane Irma impacts the area.
