Police are searching for a man with a scruffy beard who suspected of stealing money from 7-Eleven — and spilling a soft drink.

Around 5 a.m. March 18, a man came into the gas station at 690 S. Nova Road and served himself a soft drink from the soda machine. He came up to the counter to pay, and as the cashier was placing the cash in the register he spilled the drink on her to distract her. Immediately, he leaned over the counter and reached into the drawer.

The cashier told the Ormond Beach Police Department she shoved the drawer closed as the man had his hand in it, and said the suspect took off running out the door heading west on Hand Avenue.

Police confirmed the cashier's story by an additional witness who saw the scene from the store's coffee bar and through surveillance video.

Air One was notified and after a search of the area no one matching the description of the suspect was located. Possible finger prints were turned into OBPD for evidence as well as the cup used to distract the clerk and some change left on the counter by the suspect.

The suspect is a white male approximately 5-foot-6 and 140 pounds.
