Michella Green’s father, Christopher, coaches basketball at Warner Christian Academy. Her mother, Michelle, played basketball in high school for Seabreeze. Her brother, C.J., currently holds a sports manager position at Daytona State College, and her little sister, Michiya, 5, is already attempting to challenge her on the court. It’s safe to say that Green was born to play basketball.

The four-year varsity starter has changed her game over the years, going from leading Mainland in scoring for two years to setting up her teammates to make them more successful. Her selflessness but leadership-mentality has led the Lady Bucs to a 20-win season, 10 wins better than last year, and a berth into the postseason for the first time since 2009.

“She’s my coach on the floor and the vocal leader of the team,” said coach Arthur Westbrook.

The three-year captain and two-time team MVP credited her team’s relentlessness during the season for elevating their play this year. When Westbrook would offer the girls a day off, they would refuse politely refuse and go to work.

“We just felt like, if we didn’t practice, the other teams were practicing, so we had to keep our focus on getting better,” she said.

When Green isn’t practicing and playing with her team, she’s usually spending time either at her dad’s practice or on the street court with her sister and mom. Green sometimes practices with the Warner boys, which increases her toughness. She also boasts of playing with her dad, who doesn’t take it easy on her. She says that he knocks her down, fouls her and teaches her how to handle certain game situations in their one-on-one games. Playing with mom is similar; it’s a competitive house.

“My dad thinks he’s the best because he has a shot,” Green laughs. “And my mom fouls me a lot, but my defense is too good for her.” According to her mother, Michelle, however, she’s the best and most competitive in the family.

No matter how divided they are with their individual talents, her parents are proud that Green reached the postseason in her senior year, and they will be rooting for her, when Mainland plays in the regional tournament.
