With his team down by just a touchdown at the two minutes mark in the third quarter, Sandcrabs quarterback Jadyn Nirschl attempted a simple screen pass.
However, the throw was off, deflecting off the back of an offensive lineman and into the hands of Matanzas middle linebacker Tylee Austin, who took the ball 23 yards to the end zone to give the Pirates a 14-0 lead over Seabreeze.
After weeks of dealing with rain delays, a hurricane and game cancellations, the Pirates (1-1) defeated the Sandcrabs 41-0 at Matanzas High School on the night of Monday, Sept. 18. It was the second straight game Seabreeze (0-2) had been shutout.
Despite the final score, the Sandcrabs played solid defense for the first 24 minutes of the game, holding the Pirates scoreless in the first half, while also coming up with two sacks and a turnover.
Seabreeze came down with an interception on Matanzas' first passing play of the game.
However, the Sandcrabs had a difficult time of holding onto the ball themselves. The Pirates forced five turnovers, including Austin's game-changing pick-six that gave Matanzas some breathing room in the third quarter.
Defensively, Seabreeze gave up three passing touchdowns and two scores on the ground. Three of the touchdowns came from more than 35 yards away.
In the last two games, the Sancrabs have given up a total of 83 points to their opponents.
Next up, Seabreeze will take on Astronaut at Seabreeze High School on Friday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
