Excuses, excuses

3:41 p.m. — 800 Block of South Atlantic Avenue.

Theft. The victim said she was in a motel lobby when she walked across the room, leaving her purse behind. When she returned, the purse was gone. Surveillance video showed the suspect, an employee, take the purse.

Another employee found the purse in a trash can on the third floor. The victim said it was missing $800.

Surveillance video also showed the suspect placing the purse in the trash can.

In a post-Miranda interview, the suspect admitted to taking the purse. He said he took it because he thought it belonged to an employee. Asked why he put the purse in a trash can, the suspect said he was going to give it to someone on the third floor, but when she wasn’t there, he put it in the trash. Asked why he didn’t turn it in to the front desk, he said he didn’t have time because he had to pick up his check and leave. Asked why he didn’t turn the purse in when he picked up his check, he said he didn’t have time.

He was arrested for grand theft.

Email scam

11:48 a.m. — First Block of Park Terrace

Fraud. The victim was corresponding via email with someone he thought was from Microsoft. The suspect would remotely fix things on his computer and then ask him to send I-tunes gift cards to him by email. Over a week’s time, he was scammed out of $1,300. When a technician did not show up at the house to fix some issues, he figured he had been scammed.

Wild chase

10:35 p.m. — West Granada Boulevard and North Beach Street.

Fleeing Vehicle. The officer was stopped at a red light a few cars behind two cars that were side-by-side at the light. When the light turned green, the two cars spun their tires and took off speeding. They traveled east on West Granada Boulevard and by the time they got from U.S. 1 to Beach Street, they were going 80 mph, according to the officer’s estimate.

The officer activated his lights and the cars increased their speed up the Granada Bridge. After crossing the bridge, both cars turned onto South Halifax Drive and then turned left on Bosarvey Drive.

Meanwhile, an officer was parked on Seton Trail waiting for a trailer to be moved from blocking the road. One of the two speeding cars turned south on Seton Trail but had to pull over because the trailer blocked the road. The driver got out of the car and ran through a yard toward the west.

One of the officers drove onto Seton Trail and saw the suspect emerge from a yard. He was sweating profusely and wet from running through wet bushes (it had recently rained.)

The suspect had a key that matched the car left on Seton Trail. The key was able to start the car, and the suspect was arrested.
