Mainland senior defensive back John Huggins announced his decision to play football for the University of Florida via Twitter on Dec. 17. Huggins, who was formerly committed to rival Florida State prior to then-head coach Jimbo Fisher's departure to Texas A&M, tweeted that he was "1,000% committed" and that he plans to sign with the Gators on Dec. 20 as part of the early signing period.

Huggins is rated as a four-star safety by ESPN and is the No. 23-overall player at his position.

The Buccaneers' boys basketball team has long forgotten its 72-60 loss to Father Lopez in the second game of the season. Since then, Mainland has won its last five games in a row.

The Buccaneers played two close games against Umatilla and Archbishop McCarthy, defeating both squads by a combined three points. The Buccaneers defeated the Bullogs 68-67 on Dec. 15 and topped McCarthy 68-66 on Dec. 16 as part of the Umatilla Holiday Shootout. In addition, the boys followed up the shootout with a 65-44 rout of Deltona on Dec. 18.

In addition, the girls team bounced back from its second loss of the season quite well.

After losing to Flagler Palm Coast on Dec. 11, the Buccaneers responded with three-straight wins, including a 63-23 beat down of New Smyrna Beach on Dec. 15 and a 64-25 steam roll of Deltona on Dec. 18.
