Florida Hospital has selected Erik Nason to serve as the athletic trainer to coordinate care for the 5,000 student athletes at Volusia County Schools. His new role is part of the hospital’s five-year, $2 million partnership with Volusia County Schools established in June.
Nason’s duties will include working to improve concussion protocols and assisting athletes with condition and nutrition, according to a press release. Nason spent 17 years as an athletic trainer at the Kennedy Space Center, providing care for employees and astronauts.
The agreement calls for Florida Hospital to work to reduce chronic absenteeism and encourage career paths in health care.
5K race in Port Orange to benefit hospice
The annual 5K Run and Walk to benefit Halifax Health - Hospice Family Caregiver Program will be 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Kenneth W. Parker Amphitheater, 2001 City Center Circle in Port Orange.
The event, called Celebrating the Spirit of Caregiving, is hosted by Halifax Health Hospice and the presenting sponsor is Dale’s Shoes.
Race day activities include a Kiddie Fitness Zone at 8:15 a.m. for children 10 years of age and younger and a Veterans Community Pinning after the race. The 5K Run & Walk is part of the Live Your Life Well and Daytona Running Series and will be professionally timed.
“Each year we look for new ways to expand upon this community fundraiser and this year we have added free registration for children under the age of 12 with a paying adult,” said Mary Jo Allen, executive director for Halifax Health - Hospice.

Day of Remembrance set for victims and survivors
Halifax Health – Hospice and the 7th Judicial Circuit Victims’ Services Coalition will host National Day of Remembrance Observance for local victims and survivors of homicide and traumatic loss at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27 at the Shores Resort and Spa, 2637 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach Shores.
The ceremony is a way for survivors and loved ones to remember, reflect and heal, according to a press release from Halifax Health. Family members or loved ones will be invited to read names of victims.
Participants are also invited to decorate and add a commemorative rock to the Healing Hearts River of Rocks at the Halifax Health – Hospice Port Orange Care Center, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange. Rocks should be approximately 3x6 inches in size and decorated using waterproof acrylic paint and permanent markers.
Speakers will include State Attorney R.J. Larizza, Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood, Ormond Beach Police Chief Robert “Jesse” Godfrey and Assistant State Attorney J. Ryan Will.
The program will close with a Native American healing ritual on the beach led by Jim Sawgrass of the Muskogee-Creek Indian Tribe and a performance by vocalist Michelle Marie.
Participants are encouraged to bring a 5x7-inch or smaller unframed picture to place on the Wall of Remembrance during the ceremony. All pictures will be returned.

Nurses aid God’s Bathhouse
The Halifax Health Nursing Vision 20/20 committee recently donated $250 to God’s Bathhouse of Volusia, a non-profit organization that has a mobile unit to provide free showers, toiletries and clothing to homeless residents. The nursing group has fundraisers to help hospital employees with nursing scholarships and local charities.
