Yes Coffee is now serving its curated brews in a new, larger location in Flagler Beach.
The coffee shop — owned by Mike and Rachel McDermott — has moved from its location at the Coastal Family Church in Flagler Beach to 213 S. Second St., Unit 2. Everything about Yes Coffee, is carefully measured, down to the details, Mike McDermott said.
“It’s chemistry, really, if you want to get down to it,” he said. “It’s just adding stuff with the right ratios and the right amounts in the right temperatures.”
Rachel McDermott said the new location allows the McDermotts to build a space around their coffee.
“That’s why we’re so excited about our new space,” she said. “We’re pairing the atmosphere with how our coffee looks, tastes and feels.”
Yes Coffee’s beans are roasted locally in Ormond Beach, she said, and some of the shop’s merchandise and treats also come from local Flagler Beach businesses.
Rachel McDermott opened her first coffee shop in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, while the two were there for a Bible study school. That shop, called Victory Cafe, raised money for missionaries, she said. When she and Mike left, she said, they handed over the shop to another missionary.
Victory Cafe is how the two got together. Mike McDermott, who prefers to drink tea, said he researched coffee for a week straight.
“I intentionally got into coffee to impress my wife,” he said.
The South African shop was so successful, he said, that the pastor of Coastal Family Church asked the McDermotts to replicate the shop on the site of Coastal Family Church after the two returned to Flagler Beach. That location opened in July 2019, just one month after the McDermotts married.
The new shop is double the size, and all of the details — from the interior design to the staff hired, the curated recipes and the ingredients — were carefully selected.
“The whole idea was just to have a community and to have coffee be the center of that,” McDermott said. “We have a place where it’s very welcoming and the aesthetic is somewhere between modern and homey.”
At Yes Coffee, he said, all the ingredients are weighed. The menu is simple. The grind of the coffee and the espresso is adjusted throughout the day. The syrups are all made in-house with Yes Coffee’s own recipes, he said — even the tea is weighed and bagged in the store.
The details are important, he said.
“We weigh everything, and we make that the focus of excellence,” he said. “Otherwise, you’re just going to get a generic product that everybody else has.”
Rachel McDermott said she and Mike are both excited to see the shop come together as a place of community.
“We’re just so excited to really be a place where people can gather,” she said. “We just love seeing people come together over a cup of coffee.”
