LETTERS: In rejecting challenge to the Bible, school district unfairly holds it to a different standard

Doomed from the onset, in the recent challenge to the Bible as inappropriate reading for Flagler County students, our school superintendent has opted to close the challenge and the subsequent appeal and retain the book.

The decision was reached without the usually required review process, demonstrating how our and other school districts are going out of their way to hold the “good book” to a different standard irrespective of the explicit sexual content being similar to other books that have been banned.

The graphic vengeful violence content was discounted, as well. Also, very importantly, and of great concern, is that the “good book” calls for the killing of homosexuals. The danger associated with that kind of content alone and its harmful potential should be obvious to any school district given that this indisputable “word of God” message could become actionable by impressionable kids. This content concern alone makes the retention of the Bible a wrongheaded decision.

The hypocrisy of sidestepping the book review process and deciding that the Bible is immune to being challenged is clear. And what is also clear is that Florida school districts, including ours, staffed with educated and intelligent folks, should not be immune to reason and recognise the hypocrisy, as well.

Some very likely do, but are compelled to bend to the will of the DeSantis-controlled legislature and Department of Education who have stacked the deck against any challenge to the Bible.
