Flagler Palm Coast won the Five Star Conference wrestling championship Saturday, Feb. 3, at DeLand. The Bulldogs won seven titles and tallied 226 points to easily win the title.
New Smyrna Beach placed second with 151 points, DeLand was third with 141 points, Seabreeze was fourth with 75 points, and Mainland, which brought just six wrestlers, placed fifth in the seven-team field with 72 points.
FPC’s weight-class winners were Joseph Dailey (106 pounds), Trey Twilley (126), Toryion Stallings (132), Carson Baert (144), Kelton Howard (165), Brandon Calidonio (175) and Ethan Laupepa (215).
Mainland’s Jamison Pinyan won the 157-pound title. Seabreeze had three runners-up: Caden Robbins (106), Williams Sites (126) and Luke Cloer (285). FPC had two runners-up: Doyvonne Leadon (150) and Isaiah Wilkins (120). And two Mainland wrestlers also finished second: Jeremiah Garcia (132), Isaac Simien (144).
Matanzas and FPC finished first and second among 29 teams at the Clay Rotary Girls Wrestling Invitational on Feb. 3. Matanzas racked up 167.5 points, while FPC had 138 points.
The Pirates and Bulldogs each had four champs. Mariah Mills (110), R`Cardenay Michel (115), Tiana Fries (140) and Ani Brown (235) won titles for Matanzas.
Joslyn Johnson (100), Christina Borgmann (125), Ana Vilar (130) and Alexa Calidonio (170) were FPC’s champs.
Borgmann remained undefeated for the season at 14-0, while Vilar (27-1) and Mills (26-1) have just one loss and Fries (21-2) has lost just twice.
Matanzas junior Kendall Bibla finished second at 145, losing a close 5-4 decision in the final to rival Katherine Stewart of Bartram Trail. Bibla won the state 145 championship last season, defeating Stewart in the final by a 15-4 major decision.
FPC’s Alisha Vilar (140) and Gabrielle Proctor (155) also placed second. Matanzas’ Jazlyn (105), Autumn Jarvis (120) and Saiomy Cabrera (130) placed third.
At the Clay Rotary boys tourney, Matanzas senior Jordan Mills improved to 41-0 on the season. Mills defeated Nease’s Alan Rivera by a 10-9 decision for the 190-pound championship. Rivera fell to 31-2 with the loss.
Seabreeze achieved its best score of the season at the Florida High School Competitive Cheerleading State Championships on Feb. 3 in Lakeland.
The Sandcrabs placed second in the Class 1A Small Co-ed Semifinals with a score of 76.30.
FPC and Matanzas both competed in the Class 2A Small Non-Tumbling Semifinals. The Bulldogs placed 12th with 73.60 points. The Pirates were 17th with 68.2 points.
Seabreeze will compete at the National High School Championships Feb. 9-12 at Disney World Resort’s ESPN Wide World of Sports.
FPC’s soccer teams didn’t reach the playoffs, but they both had successful seasons. The boys had their best season in nine years. They finished with a 16-5 record, which included a 10-game unbeaten streak. They went 7-0 at home. They scored 65 goals and had 11 clean sheets. Their 22 goals allowed was their lowest goals against total in 11 seasons.
The FPC girls team advanced to the district and Five Star Conference championship games despite losing Savanah O’Grady, their captain and leading scorer, early in the season. Eight freshmen contributed to the varsity squad including Ivy Chen, who was their second-leading scorer with 10 goals. O’Grady scored 11 goals in nine games.
The Bulldogs finished with a 12-10-2 record, playing against several ranked teams. They scored 63 goals and goalie Natalie Neal recorded 10 clean sheets.
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School girls volleyball team won the Diocese of St. Augustine Middle School Championship, completing an undefeated season.
The Palm Coast school defeated Blessed Trinity of Jacksonville to end the season with an 11-0 record. SEAS won both the regular-season and tournament championships. Saya Galisin was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Galisin, Janie Allio, and Sophie Garcia were named to the All-Conference team.
This was the third straight regular season championship for SEAS. In the past three seasons, the girls have a combined record of 30-3, including 21 straight regular season victories.
The players are Saya Galisin, Janie Allio (captain), Sophie Garcia, Gabby Kes, Amaries Daily, Channing Gleason, Marianne Doctora, Sofia Azevedo, and Vivian Vadurro. The team is coached by Jody Marolf.
