Matanzas’ boys soccer season ended Tuesday night, Feb. 13, with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss on the road to New Port Richey River Ridge in the Region 2-5A quarterfinals.
The Pirates ended their season with an 11-5-2 record and a district championship.
The Seabreeze girls soccer team advanced to the Region 2-5A semifinals with a 4-1 victory over Wesley Chapel at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
Kylie Watson and Annabel Thistle scored two goals apiece for the Sandcrabs (11-6-1). Seabreeze is scheduled to travel to Auburndale, a 4-0 winner over River Ridge, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16.
Brady Putis was named the Matanzas boys weightlifting team’s first Iron Pirate. Putis, who had not missed a morning workout in three weeks, competed in the Pirates’ weightlifting meet on the afternoon of Feb. 7 and then suited up to play in a preseason lacrosse game against Atlantic Coast.
The Pirate lifters improved to 3-0 with wins over Menendez and Crescent City. Maison Leonard (119), Jayden Sao (129), Jayce Raijai (154), Jonathan Drew-Kulak (169) and Cole Hash (199) won both Olympic and traditional competitions. Top lifters were Hash with 615 pounds in traditional (275 clean and jerk, 340 bench press) and Ahmad Louis-Charles who won the 238-pound traditional tile with a 540 total (225 clean and jerk, 315 bench press).
In Flagler Palm Coast’s boys weightlifting meet against New Smyrna Beach and Father Lopez on Feb. 7, the Bulldogs’ Cody Strawser won the 199-pound traditional (340 total) and Olympic title (285). Brayden Depotter won both competitions in the unlimited class with a 390 Olympic total and a 555 traditional total. Alex Huynh won the 129-pound traditional title with a 265 total.
Mainland is the top seed in Region 1-5A in the boys state basketball playoffs. The Bucs (19-6) will host Pensacola Pine Forest (15-13) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15.
Pine Forest upset Pensacola Washington 45-44 to win District 1-5A and advance to the playoffs. If Mainland wins, it will host Washington or Choctawhachee on Feb. 20.
The Mainland girls basketball team is seeded second in the region and was scheduled to host Chocktawhachee on Feb. 14.
