Three Flagler County high school wrestlers won titles at boys district tournaments Feb. 15-16. Matanzas’ Jordan Mills won the 190-pound title at the District 4-2A tournament at New Smyrna Beach. Flagler Palm Coast’s Toryian Stallings (132 pounds) and Ethan Laupepa (215 pounds) won championships at the District 2-3A tournament at Gainesville Buchholz.
Mills remained undefeated with a 44-0 record on the season. He decisioned Sawyer VanRider of NSB 4-2 in the final. Stallings improved to 38-2. Laupepa improved to 35-2.
Seven other FPC wrestlers also qualified for the regional tournament: Joseph Dailey (fourth, 106); Raheem Rolle (fourth, 113), Trey Twilley (second, 126), Carson Baert (second, 144), Doyvonne Leadon (fourth, 150), Kelton Howard (third 165) and Brandon Calidonio (third 175).
At the District 4-2A tourney, Matanzas qualified five wrestlers, Seabreeze qualified four and Mainland qualified three for the regional. Matanzas’ other qualifiers were: Mikey Fries (second, 144), Mason Obama (fourth, 165), Carmine Lania (third, 175) and Doug Crutchley (fourth, 285).
Seabreeze’s qualifiers were: Evan Bobak (fourth, 113), Jayce Gainer (fourth, 120), William Sites (second, 126) and Aiden Hedge (fourth, Seabreeze). Mainland’s qualifiers were: Aiden West (third, 138), Jeremiah Garcia (second, 132) an Elliott Moore (fourth, 215).
The reigning Class 5A state champion Mainland girls basketball team is one win away from returning to the state final four. The second-seeded Buccaneers (16-12) will travel to No. 1 seed Pensacola Washington (23-1) on Thursday Feb. 22 for the Region 1-5A championship game.
Mainland won its first two playoff games at home, defeating Fort Walton Beach Choctatchee 70-31 on Feb. 14 in the regional quarterfinals and Tallahassee Rickards 52-42 on Feb. 19.
Seabreeze’s girls soccer team won a Region 2-5A semifinal 2-0 over Auburndale on Feb. 16 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. Morgan Long scored both goals for the Sandcrabs (12-6-1). Seabreeze was scheduled to host Horizon in the region final at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
The 13th annual Race of the Runways for Rotary 5k Run/Walk is scheduled to Saturday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m at the Flagler Executive Airport. The race starts at sunset on the runway of the Flagler Executive Airport. The course is marked by airplane landing lights and the searchlight of a circling helicopter.
Participants are encouraged to add to the fun by wearing glow-in-the-dark clothing and accessories. There will be prizes for the best ‘bling'. Funds raised support the Rotary Club of Flagler Beach’s seven areas of service. It is the club’s largest fundraiser of the season.
About 500 participants are expected. Event t-shirts and this year's collector finisher medal modeled after the PBY Catalina airplane will be available for the first 500 people registered. Registration is $40. Participants can sign up at https://www.runway5kflagler.com. An after-race pizza party is included in registration. Guests can purchase after-party tickets for $5. Race packets are available at the aiport admininstration building 4-6 p.m. Feb. 23 and beginning at 4 p.m. on the day of the race.
Matanzas’ Jordan Youngman and FPC’s Olivia Gaines each won two events at the Flagler Pinnacle Preseason Classic track and field meet on Feb. 16 at the Bulldogs’ stadium.
Gaines won girls long jump (17 feet, 2.75 inches) and triple jump (34-9.75) and also ran on the Bulldogs’ winning 4x100 relay. Youngman won the 100 hurdles (15.65 seconds) and the girls 400 hurdles (1:06.26) and also ran on the Pirates’ winning 4x400 relay.
FPC’s Chase Magee won boys pole vault with an 11 feet, 11.25-inch vault. FPC’s Kamron Davis won the 1,200 run in 3:19.14.
Last spring, Seabreeze javelin throwers Levi Hayworth and Chandler Mitzo placed second and third at the Class 3A state championships. At the preseason meet, Hayworth, who is not back with FPC, placed second behind Ponte Vedra’s Vincent Johnson, while Seabreeze’s Mitzo was third.
