It’s now the second week of the annual PAWS Summer Camps at the Halifax Humane Society. Summer Camp Coordinator Kelsey Thomas is leading the camp with assistance from newly hired Volunteer Manager Lindsey Kelly.
Some students might recognize Kelsey because during the school year she teaches at Ormond Beach Middle School.

This summer she is using her teaching skills to transform summer camp into a learning experience for the children.
Halifax Humane is offering six weeks of summer children and there are still some spot s left for weeks four, five and six.
The week-long camps are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. A variety of speakers are scheduled each day to introduce the children to various services and animal care information.
Upcoming organizations scheduled are representatives from Angels with Paws Service Dogs, Reggie the Therapy Dog, Pat Mozden from the Obedience School of Daytona, the K-9 unit from the Daytona Police Department, and the Bat Lady.
Thursdays are field trip days and the children visit the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet for hands-on activity and special programs provided by the staff there.
“The camp allows children to interact with animals and learn more about the Halifax Humane Society. Each day the kids get to play with at least one shelter animal,” said Barry Kukes, Community Outreach Director. “We record their interaction with the dog or cat and then post the video on our Facebook page. Several animals have been adopted due to these videos showing how the dogs are very kid friendly,”
There is still time to register your child for a very different and educational summer camp experience at the PAWS Summer Camp at HHS.
The cost of the camp is $150 for the week and includes snacks, drinks, camp T-shirt and the trip to the Marine Science Center.
