The Ormond Beach Civil Air Patrol Cadet Color Guard Team hauled in the hardware at a state competition last week, winning seven trophies in 11 events in the group’s first ever trip to the Florida Wing Cadet Competition, Dec. 8.

Teams from 10 Florida air patrol squadrons journeyed to MacDill Air Force Base, in Tampa, to compete in this annual event. Ormond Beach cadets won first place in the Mile Run and In-Ranks Inspection categories.

The team won second place in the Written Exam category, third in Indoor Practical Drill and Outdoor Practical Drill, and Brittani F. Giles won the Fleet Foot Female trophy by turning in the fastest mile time of all female cadets at the competition.

In the Overall category, Ormond took second place statewide.

Under the leadership of Capt. Alexander G. Duarte, 2nd Lt. Andrea D. Giles and 2nd Lt. Kristen M. Miller, the cadets practiced three days a week for five months, logging about 200 hours of training, much of which was held at Seabreeze High School.

The Ormond Beach Composite Squadron Cadet Color Guard Team is made of Brittani F. Giles, Michael P. Gabriel, Devon W. Giles, Matthew A. Dye and Corey J. Spitz.
