Local ballroom plans charity event.

Absolutely Ballroom, 298 S. Nova Road, Suite D, has announced that it is organizing a dance event to raise money for three local charities.

They are currently seeking participants for Dancing with Desire: The Grand Competition. It is based on a similar event  in north Florida that has been successful for a decade, according to Carol Anderson, a student at Absolutely Ballroom and event volunteer.

Anderson said they are looking for eight amateur dancers who will be paired with professional dancers. They will learn to dance, taking at least one lesson per week, until the competition on Jan. 10 at News-Journal Center.

“They can be people who don’t know how to dance or people with some dance experience,” Anderson said.

The participants must also be willing to solicit sponsorships from friends and neighbors, because the goal of the event is to raise money for charity. Proceeds will go to Cinematique, the Charles and Linda Williams Children’s Museum at the Museum of Arts and Sciences and Volusia County Schools Performing Arts programs.

Anderson said Absolutely Ballroom would like to have all the dancers lined up by July 10.

“We’ll have a meet and greet with the professional dancers,” she said.

The competition in January will feature a performance by dance celebrities Georgia Ambarian and Eric Luna, who have appeared on television and won national and world championships.
