The American Legion Post No. 267 hosted the Four Chaplain's Ceremony to honor the four chaplains who comforted and offered their life jackets when their ship sank during World War II.
These men were last seen on the deck of the ship locked arm-in-arm. The program was conducted by Michael Wolohan with the assistance of Jerry Fenton, Wade Summerix, andRev. Willie Branch on Feb. 3.
The Ormond-by-the-Sea Lions Club had an eventful January this year.
On January 20, the club was presented with the 2016-2017 Club Excellence award by the Lions Club International for excelling in
community service, membership growth, communications and organizational operations. Earlier in the month, five members of the club attended the Winter Council of Governor’s meeting held at the Ocala Hilton where member Colleen O’Connor received her Governor’s Achievement Award from International Director Joyce Middleton District Governor Tito Navarro.
The award is designed to help new Lion members become familiar and fully-involved in the activities of the club. It's only given to members in their first year of membership. The club also collected and donated to a local food bank 87 cans of soup for Souper Bowl.
Put on by the United States Professional Tennis Association to benefit the Volusia Literacy Council, this year's championship will be a two-day event with a non-elimination format.
The Oceanside Country Club will host the event and participation is open to all tennis players. The proceeds will help the Literacy Council to purchase books and education material. The championship will take place March 3-4. For more information, call 255-8723 or visit VolusiaLiteracy.org
During the entire month of February, the Lions clubs in the area will be collecting food items to help feed homeless and in-need children during their spring break.
In conjunction with Food Brings Hope, Halifax Urban Ministries and the Volusia County School Social Services Department, the Lions clubs are collecting non-perishable food items like canned tuna and chicken, canned beef stew and chili, peanut butter, breakfast cereal, canned vegetables, canned pasta sauce, pork & beans, canned fruit, canned beans, boxes macaroni & cheese, dry pasta, stuffing, potatoes, rice, granola bars, Pop Tarts and canned pasta.

The Ormond String Quartet performed the first of four concerts for fifth-grade students in Volusia at Tomoka Elementary on Thursday, Feb. 8.
The members of the quartet are Donna Hauge and Betsy Kruger on violin, Marsha Shapiro on viola and Sandy Pearson on cello. Hauge talked to the students in attendance about the instruments and music they performed, which included classical, ragtime, country, folk, movie and Broadway selections. The students were also able to ask questions.
