The new law allows parents to enroll a child in any school in the state of Florida.
Online applications are now available for parents who are considering enrolling their children in a school other than their assigned school. The new “choice law” or controlled open enrollment was adopted by the Florida Legislature for implementation in the 2017-18 school year and allows parents to enroll a child in any school in the state of Florida; however, that choice is limited to schools with capacity.
The deadline to apply for the 2017-18 school year is the last day of school, May 26. Choice is limited to schools with capacity and parents must provide transportation. A lottery procedure will be used if there are more applicants than seats.
For questions, contact the Office of Student Assignment at 947-8786, ext. 50709 or 50815, or visit www.myvolusiaschools.org and click on the school choice link on the slideshow. If a parent is new to the district or does not have a Parent Portal account, paper applications are available at any school during normal school hours.

The roadway lighting along the middle median island of the Granada Bridge, from Beach Street to Riverside Drive, will be removed beginning March 6. The Florida Department of Transportation project will include the replacement of the existing bridge lighting foundations, poles and fixtures. The decorative pedestrian lighting along both Granada Bridge sidewalks will remain in operation throughout the duration of this project.
The city recently installed 20,000 square feet of sod along West Granada Boulevard. The project ran between Orchard Street and Williamson Boulevard, and 12 medians were affected. Over the next two weeks, additional irrigation cycles will be required to allow the new sod to become established. Residents may notice that the roadway is wet, or that the irrigation is currently running in these areas.
City firefighters will be inspecting and conducting water flow testing of fire hydrants from March 20 to May 31. If a fire hydrant is in your yard, please be sure that it is clear of obstructions. This procedure may cause tap water in the area to become discolored or cloudy. This is a temporary condition that can be corrected by letting the tap water run until clear, which could take a few minutes. If the water remains discolored after a few minutes of flowing, please contact Ormond Beach Public Works at 676-3220.
