Sweet-smelling smoke drifted from barbecues Saturday, as aromas from Crock-Pot concoctions filled the riverside air at Ormond Beach’s first-annual King of the Grill cook-off event, at Rockefeller Park.

People’s Premium Meats was voted most appetizing by a panel of City Commissioner judges, with owner Regina Martins and chef Donny Nobles claiming the days’ largest trophy to house in their eatery.

The People’s Choice trophy was awarded to Lulu’s, which pleased the crowd with a sampling of fish tacos, swamp wings and a seafood grill.

With sticky fingers, families and friends enjoyed their grub at high-top tables, as they watched the day’s college football games on TVs set up inside a jumbo tent. Vendors lined the sidewalks and there was also a kid’s zone, with bounce houses, trampolines and other toys.

Hosted by the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, and several other local companies, the event drew crowds from noon until night.
