We asked residents of Ormond Beach about the best advice they'd ever received. Here is one of their responses.

Belinda Legut, Ormond Beach Police Athletic League recreation leader

Best advice: Character is one of the most valued qualities of a person.

Nine years ago, when I started working for the Police Athletic League, I took several youths to a leadership training class. The Florida PAL Executive Director, L.B. Scott, asked the youth for the definition of character.

Several gave answers — pretty good ones, too  but Scott’s definition will stay with me forever. “Character is what you do or how you act when you think no one is watching,” he said.

Through the years, I have found myself in situations where this thought process has been applied to all that I do.

Several years ago, a very dear friend shared with me that “once integrity is lost, a seed of doubt has been planted, and like a weed, doubt is hard to get rid of.” So I find myself trying to do what is right, even if no one else is aware of that.
