Halifax Humane Society had its best adoption year ever in 2012, finding more than 4,000 pets throughout Volusia County forever homes.

With a total of 406 pets adopted in December, Halifax Humane Society pushed its year-end adoption total past the 4,000 mark for all of 2012.

Compared to the previous year, adoptions increased by 20%, after already increasing 23% in 2011, compared to 2010.

In the 75 years Halifax Humane Society has operated in Volusia County, this was the most pets ever adopted out of the facility. December also marked the fourth time in 2012 that the center broke a monthly adoption record.

“Seeing this many animals finding their forever homes is an affirmation that the efforts we have made the past few years are truly making a difference in our community,” said Miguel Abi-hassan, executive director. “To reach this accomplishment as we celebrate our 75th anniversary ... is truly a heartfelt achievement.”

The center’s new Meet Your Match program, which pairs adopters with pets based on personality tests, also played a part in the year’s success, he added.

Another new initiative, the humane society opened the Redinger Spay/Neuter Clinic, in Daytona Beach, last year, which has the capacity to provide 11,000 subsidized spays and neuter surgeries annually, in addition to the 4,000 already performed at the society’s main facility.

Halifax was also awarded the National CLASSY Award last September, being recognized as the top animal nonprofit in the country.
