The 24th annual Stamp out Hunger food drive is set for May 14. The National Association of Letter Carriers is asking the public to place nonperishable food items in or near their mailbox on that day for pickup. A bag for food items, donated by Publix Super Markets, will be delivered to every residence prior to the drive.

All food collected will be distributed to local food pantries.  Last year carriers collected over 50,000 pounds of food in the Volusia and Flagler areas. Visit NALC.org.

Burton qualifies for election

H. Alan Burton, candidate for Volusia County Property Appraiser, was notified April 22 by the Supervisor of Elections that he met the requirement of 3,307 valid signatures for placement on the ballot for the August 30 Primary Election, Burton said in a press release.

“As the only certified property appraiser running for the office of Property Appraiser, I think it gives voters confidence that I will get it right. I believe the voters demand that their property tax to be fair and just,” Burton stated.

Burton said wished to thank those who signed petitions. Without the petition, he would need to pay a fee of $5,775.

Nesting season starts

Turtle nesting season started May 1, and that means hundreds of sea turtles will be emerging from the surf to lay eggs on the beach in the next few months, according to a statement issued by Volusia County.

During nesting season, residents are required to turn off, shield or redirect lights so they don’t shine on the beach and confuse hatchlings on their trek to the ocean.
