The holiday parade had 85 entries

The city of Ormond Beach has announced the winners in the 24th annual Home for the Holidays Parade on Dec. 13. There were 85 parade entries with 1,800 participants.

Vehicles: Volusia County Beach Patrol, My Angels with Paws and Special Gathering; Floats: Cunningham Oil, Tomoka Elementary and Beach Bucket; Walkers: Mimi Munro Surf Camp, Encore Dance and The Church of the Holy Child; Best Overall: Holly Hill Highsteppers; and President’s Cup: Arrow Towing.

Police get support for safety program

The Ormond Beach Police Dept. has received funding in the amount of $15,403 from the Florida Dept. of Transportation for enforcement operations for traffic laws related to pedestrian and bicyclist safety, according to a report from the city. The funds can only be used for officer overtime hours spent conducting on-street enforcement operations. The program will run through May 31, 2015.

Since January of 2012, there have been 51 vehicle vs. pedestrian crashes and 60 vehicle vs. bicyclist crashes in the city, according to the report. This past spring and summer, a significant number of citations were written in reference to crosswalk and red light violations by automobiles.

Police help distribute food

The Ormond Beach Police Department Victim Advocate’s office and community service officers helped the Community Christmas Club of the Halifax Area Inc. distribute 45 boxes of food to families that needed a helping hand before Christmas. Each year, locally raised money provides holiday meals for more than 800 local families in east Volusia County, according to the Community Christmas Club Facebook page. Call 323-9250.

Commission meeting scheduled

The first Ormond Beach City Commission meeting of the new year will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6., in Commission Chambers, 22 S. Beach Street. The agendas for the meetings are normally available on ormondbeach.org the weekend before the meeting.
