Public input will be sought on center

At their July 29 meeting, the City Commission approved a work authorization for the design of the Environmental Learning Center. Officials learned earlier this year that half of the construction cost will be paid by an ECHO grant. The facility, with a total cost of $800,000, will be located in Central Park on the north side of Division Avenue just east of the new culvert bridge crossing.

Mark Dowst & Associates was selected to prepare the conceptual design, architectural services, and engineering at a cost of $98,900. The company will also present plans and get feedback from the public, school classrooms and city advisory boards.

Field house uses to be expanded

Also at the meeting, the City Commission approved additional work for A.M. Weigel Construction Inc. to complete a multipurpose building under construction at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The original concept in 2013 was for a football field house at a cost of $403,698. A local businessman, Greg Smith, donated $120,000 toward the cost.

At a Leisure Services Board meeting in May, the members decided to pursue expanding the usage of the field house to include meetings, educational seminars, athletic seminars, company picnics, the Wendelstedt Umpire School, family reunions, etc. Some of the uses would provide revenue to the city through rentals.

On July 29, the City Commission approved an additional $39,898.75 to cover carpeting, an aluminum walkway cover and foundations. The Leisure Services Department is seeking donations that would be used to replace the extra money provided by the city.
