Sealant is being applied to the bridge.

Those who have been backed up in traffic, because of work on the Granada Bridge, will be glad to know that no work will be done on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend. Current road work is requiring lane closures.

A sealant is being applied to all traffic lanes as well as the bike path, according to Glen Rainey, spokesman for the Florida Department of Transportation. It’s a maintenance task that must be performed, about every seven years, to prevent moisture from seeping into the roadway and causing the rebar in the structure to rust.

Rainey said it’s a time-consuming project because the sealant must dry during daylight hours. Currently, the contractor, Bridge Masters, of Tampa, is working from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. He said they are evaluating the traffic conditions and may start working at night “if the traffic gets too bad.”

However, if they work at night, a lane would need to be closed in the morning because the sealant must dry in the sunlight. Also, it would extend the time required to complete the project. Under the current schedule, they are expecting to finish in the first or second week of June.

He said they will not be working Memorial Day weekend.
