James Stowers has filed to run for re-election to his Zone 1 seat on the City Commission. He was elected in 2010, and successfully ran for re-election in 2012. Previously, he served on the Historic Landmark Preservation Board.

Stowers has a master's degree in urban and regional planning, and a law degree from the University of Florida Levin College of Law. He currently works at Wright, Casey and Stowers PL.

All five members of the Ormond Beach City Commission are now running for re-election.

City requests block grant funds

At the June 2 meeting, the City Commission approved the following items in this year’s funding request for Community Development Block Grants, which are federal funds administered by Volusia County.

Ormond Beach Sports Complex, T-Ball Field improvements to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements (parking spaces and connection sidewalks): $38,333; Ormond Beach Housing Authority, roof replacement for South Washington Street public housing units: $15,000; Great Kids Explorer Club Inc.: $15,000; Halifax Urban Ministries:$16,000; and Volusia/Flagler Coalition for the Homeless: $10,000.

John Anderson Update

John Anderson Drive will be closed to through traffic from Riverwood Drive to Amsden Road until July 11, in order to construct drainage improvements. Call 676-3269.

Meet the city manager … and guest

The next Meeting with the Manager will be 3:30–4:30 p.m. on June 9 in the Training Room at City Hall, 22 South Beach Street. Julia Truilo, director of Ormond MainStreet, will be the special guest.

“I’ve been being bringing in guests to try to get more attendance,” said City Manager Joyce Shanahan at the recent City Commission meeting.

Entry to the Training Room is in the breezeway between City Hall and the Library. The public is invited to attend and express their ideas, comments and suggestions.
