The Ormond Beach Civil Air Patrol Cadet Color Guard Team won eight trophies at the recent Southeast Regional Competition and will be competing for the national title at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, headquarters of the Civil Air Patrol, Dec. 29 to Jan. 2.

Seven teams competed in the regional championship at Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Georgia. Lt. Andrea Giles, cadet activities officer, said the team missed first place by one point, and the top two teams are going to the national competition.

Competitions included indoor positing of the colors; outdoor posting of the colors; analyzing and solving a problem as a team; written exam on leadership and aerospace; physical fitness; uniform inspection; public speaking and sportsmanship.

Giles said the cadets practiced and studied an average of 12 hours a week during the month of September and October. She said The Casements was very helpful in allowing them to use the property to practice.

“We are grateful,” she said.

In addition to using the flag pole at The Casements, the cadets used the mirrored room. Giles said they were able to make sure they moved, saluted and marched in sync.

“They have to move together as one and it helps to do it in front of a large mirror to see what needs improvement,” she said

They also have to go up stairs in the competition, and it helped to practice on stairs at The Casements.
