First Responders cookout

When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Seaside Manor of Ormond Beach, 1050 Ocean Shore Blvd.

Details: Join Seaside Manor assisted living and memory care for a cookout to thank local first responders. There will be hamburgers and hot dogs. Call 441-1771.

Halifax Genealogical Society

When: 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Where: Ormond Beach Library Auditorium, 30 S. Beach St.

Details: This month's speaker is Annette Burke Lyttle, who will present "Chasing Uncle William through the Wilds of Cyberspace." Learn how too reconstruct life stories with online resources. This is the society's annual Lani LaMee Memorial presentation. Visitors welcome. Call 672-3806.

Friday, Jan. 10

River Otter program

When: 10-11 a.m.

Where: Environmental Discovery Center, 601 Division Ave.

Details: Take your young ones to the city's Little Learner's program, designed for children 3-5. Discover otter biology and behavior. Space is limited. Call 615-7081.

'Fresh Works 2: Starry, Starry Night Exhibition' opening reception

When: 5-7 p.m.

Where: The Casements, 25 Riverside Drive

Details: The Florida Women's Arts Association will be hosting an opening champagne reception for the latest group exhibition, which will be on display at The Casements through Feb. 4. Exhibition features artwork of over 30 artists, including photography, painting, mixed media and more. No admission charge.

'Botanicals: Colors and Curves of Nature' opening reception

When: 6-8 p.m.

Where: Ormond Memorial Art Museum, 78 E. Granada Blvd.

Details: Two artists, Caroline and Paul Rowntree, explore the environment in their newest exhibit at OMAM. Comprised of paintings and digital prints, the Rowntrees invite you to appreciate the essential beauty of the natural world. Both artists will be present at the opening reception. Exhibition will be on display through Feb. 16.

'Hollywood Canteen, the musical'

When: 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12

Where: Museum of Arts and Sciences Root Auditorium, 352 S. Nova Road

Details: See this original WWII-era musical, written by local theater producer and director Gary Broughman, featuring a live jazz band and popular big band music performed in character by Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. The story is set in June of 1945, with soldiers beginning to trickle home. Among them is one young soldier suffering from amnesia and searching for a clue to his identity. Saturday, Jan. 11

Florida Black Bears

When: 10-11 a.m. 

Where: Environmental Discovery Center, 601 Division Ave.

Details: Discover the Florida black bear's biology and behavior. Find out what to do during an encounter and why bears are attracted to residences. Presented by Janelle Musser, of the FWC Black Bear Management Program. Space is limited. Call 615-7081.

The Art of Making Bread

When: 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Where: Arts on Granada, 67 W. Granada Blvd.

Details: Learn the basics of making bread the old fashioned way. Take home a pan of bread dough, ready to bake in your oven at home. Deadline to apply is Thursday, Jan. 9. Call 871-9906 to reserve your spot. Costs $55. All supplies included.

Rat Pack Together Again

When: 2-4 p.m.

Where: Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, 399 N. U.S. 1

Details: Go on a musical journey featuring the greatest hits from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr, including "Come Fly With Me," "My Way" and "That's Amore." Tickets cost $30. Call 676-3375.=

Ice Cream with a Cop

Where: Hershey's Ice Cream, 1474 W. Granada Blvd.

Details: Join the Ormond Beach Police Department for a chance to share what's on your mind. Free ice cream provided by Hershey's. 

Thursday, Jan. 16

Glenn Miller Orchestra

When: 7-9 p.m.

Where: Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center, 399 N. U.S. 1

Details: See the famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, returning to Ormond for one show only. Listen to big band standards like "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "In the Mood" and "Moonlight Serenade." Tickets start at $23. Call 676-3375 or buy at the box office.
