The Capt. James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has announced its recently-elected officers, who will hold their positions through 2022. The officers are:
The Cherry Laurel Garden Club of Daytona Beach has won two awards for its submittal of its annual yearbook: The 2019 Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Yearbook Award and the 2019 Deep South Region Yearbook Award.
The yearbook competed with that of 235 other clubs at the state level and won at the FFGC judging, according to a press release. After that, the yearbook was sent to the Deep South Region Garden Clubs for judging against yearbooks from the six participating states — Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. The club's yearbook will now be sent for judging to the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
The yearbook is a "celebration and tribute to the club's members, and to the incredible work they do in the communities they serve," the press release states.
The Special Yearbook Committee was composed of Chair Carole Valcik, Andrea Clark, Liz Christman, Kathleen Pruett, Amy Valcik and Club President Nannette Baker. The women not only documented the club's history and featured the floral design talents of Penny Decker and Andrea Finn, but also "reinforced shared values of community service and stewardship, celebrated affiliations with other organizations, and provided a variety of educational resources and practical information." The new graphic design the women developed also gave the club a new identity.
This was the first yearbook supported by local businesses, many which both gave advertising sponsorships and are supporting the club as it plans to host the upcoming District VI fall meeting.
The Knights of Columbus Prince of Peace Council 8791's annual Campaign for Citizens with Disabilities fund drive made it possible to distribute $6,260 in grants to five Ormond Beach schools, two charities serving people with developmental disabilities and a statewide charity, a press release stated.
The recipients were: the Special Olympics Volusia/Flagler and ARC of Volusia, and each received $1,567; the Exceptional Student Education programs at Ormond Beach Middle School, and at Pathways, Pine Trail, Tomoka and Osceola Elementary, and each received $500; and the Florida KoC Charities Inc., which received $626.
The grants were a result oof the council selling Tootsie Rolls at local stores and at Prince of Peace Catholic Church earlier this year. The Campaign for Citizens with Disabilities is the Knight's largest annual fundraiser, according to the press release.
“Through the efforts of our council members and the incredible generosity of area residents and visitors, we are pleased to again provide much needed-funds to help local students and citizens with learning and developmental challenges,” Grand Knight Mark Leary said. “The Campaign would not be possible without the support of Publix Super Markets and Walmart, and we thank them for giving us access to their storefronts and customers again this year.”
National Teacher Appreciation Week starts on May 4, and will run through May 8, and Volusia County Schools is encouraging the community to show their messages of thanks and support with signs and marquees.
Signs in store windows, electronic message boards and static marquees were listed as ways to show support in an email by VCS. Additionally, the school district asks that you consider sending teachers a shout-out via business social media accounts with the hashtag #VCSTeachersAreSuperheroes.
The Council On Aging of Volusia County recently announced it has received a $40,000 grant from Truist Financial Corporation to launch the Emergency Senior Nutrition Program, which will provide provide pre-packaged meals to at least 500 elderly Volusia County residents for one month, a press release stated.
The grant will provide the first 266 participants with two 14-day meal deliveries, and the program is designed to encourage mobile seniors to stay at home during the pandemic. It also aims to minimize outside contact for at-risk seniors while making sure they receive optimal nutrition.
“As the COVID-19 outbreak has impacted our area, COA has been receiving more requests for home-delivered meals," said Sarah Gurtis, Council on Aging’s president and CEO. "In response, we have been fast-tracking those who call as well as those who have been on the waiting list for meals. This generous support from Truist helps us immensely as we support our seniors in remaining safely at home with the items they need until this crisis passes.”
