The City Commission approved the constitution of two Sunoco Inc. gas stations at prominent locations along Granada Boulevard.

The gas stations, which were approved as two separate ordinances on first readings, will be located at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Granada Boulevard, and Interstate 95 and Granada Boulevard (formerly a Waffle House).

The two ordinances were the second and third relating to new Sunoco gas stations brought before the commission since February.

Previously, the commission approved an ordinance March 5, rezoning the lot at 460 S. Atlantic Ave., to allow Sunoco to demolish the existing convenience store and eight fueling stations and reconstruct a 2,455-square-foot Sunoco convenience store with six fueling positions.

The gas station at U.S. 1 and Granada Boulevard, which officially has addresses of 3 and 9 N. Yonge St., will be 3,159 square feet and include 12 fueling stations.

The gas station at U.S. 1 and Granada Boulevard will also include several aesthetic elements, like added landscaping, coquina shells incorporated into building materials and a structure built to reflect the architecture of the Ormond Firehouse and the Andy Romano Beachfront Park

“I think that’s probably the best looking gas station I’ve ever seen,” City Commissioner Rick Boehm said after seeing a presentation during the meeting. “And I really appreciate Sunoco going along with Ormond Beach themes.”

Beohm’s sentiment was echoed by other City Commissioners.

Sunoco’s Clayton McCane said he hopes construction on the gas station at U.S. 1 and Granada Boulevard could begin in June, and could potentially be finished within 100 days.

“We have a number of projects in the area — Sunocos that we’re doing — and we’re trying to bump this one up,” he said. “We’re excited to do it, and right now, I think we’re looking at it as being No. 4 (in the area).”

The gas station at Granada Boulevard and I-95, which officially has addresses of 1546 and 1566 W. Granada Blvd., will also be 3,159 square feet, but will have eight fuel dispensers, or 16 fueling stations.

According to the city, the location at U.S. 1 and Granada Boulevard has been vacant for more than a year.

The Planning Board unanimously approved recommending the City Commission approve both ordinances and made suggestions to the designs, which Robert Merrill, of Cobb & Cole P.A., who spoke on behalf of Sunoco during the commission meeting, said were taken into account.
