At their May 20 meeting, the City Commission authorized the collective bargaining agreements that city staff signed recently with the police and fire fighters unions.

No comments were made along with the vote, but before the meeting, commissioners expressed gratitude that the city and unions reached the agreements.

“We’ve made huge leaps in pension reform,” Commissioner Troy Kent said.

“We’re obviously very pleased that we’ve reached an agreement, and are not in a confrontation,” said Commissioner Rick Boehm. “It gives us peace of mind.”

He said the budget director will now know what the salaries will be when she is planning the budget, and employees will know what their benefits are going to be.

Commissioner James Stowers said the agreement was the result of a lot of hard work and a lot of “back and forth” discussions.

“Long term, it will help our financial wellbeing,” he said.

In other business, the commissioners approved the final plat for phase one of River Oaks Subdivision, as requested by the property owner, Scott Vanacore.

Phase one consists of 47 lots. According to the city Planning Department, the improvements are near completion and the developer can sell lots for the construction of single-family homes now that the plat is approved.

The preliminary plat for the subdivision was approved by the City Commission. Phase two will have 54 lots.

The subdivision is along the east side of Interstate 95, with the southern boundary abutting the Tomoka River.
