Officials hope medians on Clyde Morris can be improved.

City Commissioners met in a brainstorming session on June 17 before their regular meeting.

“This is an informal session,” Mayor Ed Kelley said. “We never get a chance to talk.”

Sunshine laws prevent public officials from discussing public matters in private. Brainstorming sessions, open to the public, allow the commissioners to discuss any topic and bring out new ideas.

Commissioner Rick Boehm brought up the medians along Clyde Morris Boulevard, which are in the county. He said they are not properly maintained and have a poor appearance.

“People think that’s Ormond Beach,” he said.

Boehm suggested the city go ahead and maintain the medians, but City Manager Joyce Shanahan suggested working with the county to get their involvement.

City Commissioner Bill Partington agreed the median issue is a problem.

“It’s getting out of control,” he said.

The commissioners generally agreed that there is a lack of communication between the city and the county.

Mayor Ed Kelley said the county had cancelled meetings between the mayors of Volusia County and the County Chair.

“Those meetings were productive,” he said.

The commissioners directed Shanahan to set up a meeting with county officials.

The commissioners also discussed the problem of pedestrians trying to cross State Road A1A. Shanahan said the city is working with the East Volusia Traffic Safety Council to develop pedestrian crossing areas and signage.

Shanahan also updated the commissioners on topics brought up at previous brainstorming sessions, such as seeking a permanent site for a Veterans Museum. Currently, a small selection of artifacts is housed in the lobby at City Hall. She said no suitable site has been found.

The commissioners also discussed streamlining the permitting process, making city signage more uniform and other topics.
