City employee of the quarter: Mikel Zatalava

United States Army veteran, former construction worker and Publix meat-slicer Mikel Zatalava has been named Ormond Beach’s employee of the quarter. A 14-year city employee, Zatalava is the carpenter/tradesworker in the city’s building maintenance division

“Mikel will do whatever it takes to make sure that the job gets done and he does it with a smile,” it read in the city’s award announcement. “Mikel has been known to help out anyone in need, lending a helping hand to those around him, including fellow co-workers, friends and family.”

A Pennsylvania native, Zatalva lives in Ormond Beach with his wife, Trish, of 16 years, and their three children, Geena, Bryan and Travis.

Previous city employees of the quarter are James “JD” Davis, system maintenance supervisor in the wastewater division, and Sylvia Frost, leisure services office manager.

Sheriff names five employees of the quarter

Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson named five residents employees of the quarter for his department Tuesday, in Daytona Beach. The awards were given to those who took on extra tasks, worked long hours and added responsibility — “because they wanted to make a difference.”

A patroller of Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach and Holly Hill, Deputy Lonnie Feaster was the first award recipient.

"Deputy Feaster's performance has set an exemplary standard for all personnel to follow," said his supervisor, Sgt. Jeffrey Wingard.

Investigator of the quarter, Glen Bennett, created an application form that makes background investigations on potential new hires easier. He also recently completed a months-long internal investigation.

"Without investigators of Bennett's caliber, the agency would not have the superior reputation and respect from the public that it does now," said his supervisor, Lt. Erik Eagan. "I am proud of the hard work, dedication and sense of honor Investigator Bennett has towards the profession of law enforcement."

Twelve-year Internal Affairs Unit office assistant Shelley Hattaway won employee of the quarter. During a recent internal investigation, she transcribed 76 interviews and categorized hundreds of records.

Assistant Shift Supervisor Mimi Perez is willing to step into any role as needed. Her calm and easygoing nature reportedly helped make potentially stressful transitions during a recent consolidation effort easier.

And Isaac Snipes became a Volusia Bureau of Investigation volunteer in 2010, where he specializes in financial investigations. His decades of experience and professional certifications in the field were invaluable in a recent trafficking operation, in which an organization was importing, manufacturing and distributing large amounts of illegal synthetic drugs.
