Short employment; quick theft?

1:42 a.m. — 100 Block of North Nova Road

Theft. The victim at a fast-food restaurant said that at closing time she counted the cash for deposit, completed the deposit forms, and placed $1,275.92 in an envelope in a drawer under the safe and locked the drawer.

She arrived the next morning at 5 a.m. to make sure a new employee opened the store on time. She went home, but received a call from the general manager, saying the new employee had quit, and she needed to return to work.

The victim and the manager noticed the bank envelope was missing. They told police that the only other person who had a key to the drawer was the new employee.

There was no surveillance video. The investigation showed that the employee was also listed as a suspect in a theft at another fast-food restaurant.

Twenty-minute thief

11:59 p.m. — 100 Block of Loyola Drive

Car Break. The victim said he arrived home at 4 p.m. and came outside about midnight to discover his vehicle burglarized. He said the car locks itself after 20 minutes, so someone must have made entry in the 20-minute window.

When he came out, both doors were ajar. Several items were stolen, including a blood pressure cuff,   a watch and workout bag with clothing.

The police dusted for fingerprints.

Scaring away thief

4:38 a.m. — 200 Block of Grove Street

Suspicious Incident. The victim said he was in his house and looked out the front window to see a silver or light colored four-door Nissan Altima parked in the street with no lights on. He saw a male, in his late teens or early 20s, exit the driver-side rear door. The suspect entered the victim’s driveway and approached his car.

The victim then started to bang on the window, to let the suspect know he saw what he was doing. The suspect ran back to the car, which had four occupants. The victim ran after the car as it sped away.

Police searched the area with negative results.

Convenient hiding spot

4:45 p.m. — 600 Block of South Atlantic Avenue

Petit Theft. The suspect attempted to leave with two shirts, the victim said. When the security tags went through the device by the door, an audible beep was made. The suspect then tried to hide the shirts behind toys in a child nursery area by the door.

The suspect denied taking anything and he was trespassed from the store. Investigation showed he had previously been a suspect in a theft in another store.

Fake camera no help

8:09 a.m. — 100 Block of North Orchard Street

Theft. The victim said a camper bed was stolen from his business.

He said he wanted to sell it on Craig’s List but when he went outside to take a photograph, it was gone. It had been attached to a pallet.

He said he had seen a pickup truck in the area a few days before the camper was stolen. He was suspicious because he had never seen it before. He took a picture of the truck but not the tag.

He said there is a camera at a neighboring business that may have captured the theft, but he was told that the camera was fake. He is going to check with the business owner.

The victim provided a description of the camper to police.
