April 10

FPL does not accept money packs

4:03 p.m. — 800 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. Information. The manager of a business said that at about 3:30 p.m., he received a phone call from a person who claimed to be Jason Smith from Florida Power and Light. Smith told the manager that he was behind on his electric bill, and needed to make a payment of $1,986.62 immediately to prevent disconnection.

The manager asked for an account number, and was given a number which appeared to be a DeLand phone number. The caller told the manager to go to a drug store and buy four “money packs,” three for $500 and one for $486.62.

The manager contacted FPL with the information and they told him it was an attempted fraud. No money exchanged hands and the manager provided a written statement.

April 16

It takes money to borrow money

2:52 p.m. — First Block of Southern Pine Trail. Theft. The victim said she needed a loan, so, she went on the Internet. She picked a company called Ace Cash Express and contacted them about a loan.

She gave them her bank and personal information, requested a $15,000 loan and was preapproved. She said a person named “Chris Matt” told her if she put $500 on a Green Dot card and gave him the number on the back, she would get the money for the loan.

The victim complied and was told she needed to send another $200. She put more money on a Green Dot card and gave him the number. She was told she would get the loan deposited into her account but never received the money.

The victim called Chris Matt and told him she wanted her money back. He told her she would get her money back if she sent another $150.

She later received a call saying it was not a scam and they would fax paperwork to the Ormond Beach Police Department. No paperwork had been received at the time of the police report.

April 11

Stealing wheels

8:33 a.m. — 1400 Block of West Granada Boulevard. Theft. The victim said he locked his bicycle to a chain link fence beside a department store at 11:30 p.m. He returned at 7:30 a.m. the next morning and discovered it was missing. He had locked it with a U-shaped lock.

The stolen bike is a Trek Sole Ride 300 mountain bike. It is gray in color, with 26-inch wheels and six-speeds. The right brake is broken, the gears don’t change and the handle bars are loose and easily move.

There were no cameras on the side of the building where the bicycle was last seen.
