Uncool at the Casements

11:15 a.m. — First Block of Riverside Drive. Vandalism. An employee of The Casements said that the staff noticed the air conditioning was not working on the second floor. He said that he found pieces of black plastic at the north end of the building and also saw a ladder up against the building.

The maintenance crew inspected the air conditioning units on the roof and noticed that someone had removed six switches and threw them off. The maintenance worker told the officer that he spent three hours of labor locating the problem and going to the warehouse.

He also said the air conditioners were still not working, and he would have to wait to see if there was more damage. The refrigerant for the units may have been let out.

There is no video surveillance of the exterior of the building.

Don’t shoot, it’s the maid

6:15 p.m. — 200 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. Suspicious Incident. The front desk clerk at a motel told the officer there appeared to be a bullet hole in the wall between two rooms. The clerk said that when the occupants checked into Room 208 that day, they notified the front desk about the hole because they didn’t want to be responsible for the damage. The desk clerk said there was no damage to the wall yesterday when the previous guest checked out.

He said the guests in Room 209 had been staying there for six days. The guests in Room 209 told the officer they returned to the room and noticed a hole in the wall and the refrigerator. They said they had no idea how a gun was fired in their room. The officer found a bullet in the closet of Room 208 and placed it into evidence.

The guests in Room 209 said they would pay for the damages. They were advised by the hotel manager that they were not welcome to stay at the establishment, and left without further incident.

Vandal plugs sewer

12:39 p.m. — 800 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. Vandalism. The officer responded to a restaurant in reference to possible vandalism. The victim said that all the drains in the bar had backed up with sewer water.

She had called a septic contractor who located a backup in the city main. It was determined that the cause of the problem was two large, black trash bags filled with rolls of paper towels and sheets. It appeared that the bags were dropped intentionally into the grease trap in front of the building.

The victim said the repair exceeded $500 and damaged the reputation of the bar. She said she did not know who would have done it.
