The Volusia County Sheriff's Office collected over 200 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs Sept. 29, during its Prescription Drug Take-Back event.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office collected 202 pounds of prescription drugs during its Prescription Drug Take-Back event Saturday, Sept. 29, at five different locations throughout the county.
Part of a national program coordinated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the effort offered residents a safe method for disposing of unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs. Unused pills left in the home are often sought after in break-in cases, according to authorities, and flushing medications down the toilet can be detrimental to the sewage system.
The five area drop-off locations were at the Sheriff’s district offices in DeLand, Deltona, DeBary, Holly Hill and New Smyrna Beach. The locations accepted anonymous drop-offs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The VCSO said over 550,000 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in during the last national take-back event in April.
