County unemployment dips to 7.1%

The Center for Business Excellence reports that unemployment in Volusia County is at 7.1% this month, a 1.9% decrease from its year-ago rate.

Nonagricultural employment in the Ormond Beach-Daytona Beach-Deltona metro area was up .8%, or 1,300 jobs, this year compared to its year-ago rate, according to the Center for Business Excellence. Statewide employment increased 1.7% in the same time period.

In the region of Volusia and Flagler counties, the unemployment rate for July was 7.5%, 1.9% lower than the region’s year-ago rate. The state recorded an unemployment rate .4% lower than the region, at 7.1%.

Volusia County’s unemployment rate was also 7.1%.

Of a 286,734-worker regional labor force, 21,420 residents in Volusia and Flagler are currently unemployed.

Four of the 10 major industries gained jobs over the year, led by trade, transportation  and utilities, and leisure and hospitality, each of which added 800 jobs. Mining, logging and construction added 300 jobs. And manufacturing added 200 jobs.

Government, professional and business, and other services lost a combined 800 jobs over the year.
