9:56 a.m. — 900 block of South Atlantic Avenue
Criminal mischief. A 36-year-old Daytona Beach man has been charged with a felony for breaking a computer monitor inside a local gym after he was told he needed to wear a face covering while inside.
According to witness testimony and video surveillance, the man refused to leave the establishment despite his noncompliance of the mask mandate. Employees contacted police, and the man threatened to come back and kill them. He called an employee by a derogatory term, and then proceeded to swat a nearby computer monitor, knocking it down on the counter before picking it back up and slamming it on the tile floor, the police report states.
3 a.m. — 1500 block of North U.S. 1
Fraud. Police are searching for a suspect who cheated a local breakfast chain restaurant out of $100.
The suspect, described as a white male between 30 and 40 years old, arrived at the restaurant in a gray or silver SUV from the early to mid 2000s. He purchased $3 worth of food, and told the employee that he would place a $200 tip on the bill if they could give him $100 cash back of this sum. The employee agreed and the man left with the money. However, the prepaid card left behind by the man was declined.
The man is suspected to have scammed a fellow franchise in St. Augustine using the same tactic.
9:37 p.m. — 1400 block of West Granada Boulevard
Petit theft. A 38-year-old Ormond Beach man was arrested for stealing a fountain drink from a local grocery store.
According to the police report, the man had been trespassed from the store earlier this month and said he stole the $1.49 drink because "he wanted to go to jail." He told police that he felt that if he did not get help, he would hurt someone, but advised officers that he would begin fighting if he was taken to the hospital, "as they make him feel stupid and like less of a man," the report states.
The grocery store wished to pursue charges. He was taken to jail.
