Citing physical evidence, Ormond Beach police detectives have called the May 17 deaths of Heather Rasumoff, 44, and Gary Smith, 56, to be caused by murder/suicide. An autopsy report is still pending.

Police and ambulance were dispatched to the townhouse at 2 Hunters Run Circle about 9 p.m. in reference to an injured person. Inside the residence, officers discovered the two individuals. The cause of death was from a handgun that was recovered near Smith’s body, police said.

A hand gun case was found at Smith’s house, 21 Birchwood Trail, that matched the gun found at the scene.

Smith was vice president at Barnwell/Smith Team, a Merrill Lynch firm, and Rasumoff worked at Willow Pond Apartments. Police said investigation showed they had been dating about four months.

Family members had called 911 after discovering the couple.

Skate park vendor chosen

The City Commission awarded the contract for management and operation of the Nova Skate Court concession stand to Birdstown Skate and Surf, which was the only company that submitted a proposal. They will sell food items and lease merchandise.

The city will supply furnishings, such as a counter, refrigerator, TV, couch and other incidentals that will remain city property.

The term of the agreement will be for one year and can be renewed for another year with mutual agreement. Due to the uncertainty of profitability, Birdstown has the right to terminate the agreement at any time after Dec. 31, with 60 days’ notice, according to the contract.

Birdstown is currently working with the city of New Smyrna Beach for their skate court concession operation.
