Ormond Beach kids wrote free-verse poetry about their lives and favorite things last week, which they then placed in time capsules for their future selves.

Local children got an introduction to the joys of poetry July 18, at an Ormond Beach Regional Library event led by poets David Axelrod, of Daytona Beach, and Daniel Pels, of Port Orange.

Instructed to start by listing things they like, the kids wrote poems and placed them inside time capsules, which they decorated with Susan Macomber, library program coordinator.

Macomber explained how time capsules work and suggested adding other mementos from the children's lives inside. The kids were then told to hide the capsules in their closets or attics and not open them until the year 2023.

Today's mementos, Macomber said, can even become a part of history, explaining that in her own capsule, she placed a photo of a relative with a famous politician.

'Fearless,'  by Becca Bramblett

I love to sing pop music.

I imagine being a famous superstar like Taylor Swift, the award winning 23-year-old.

I want to be a singer like Taylor Swift, because she is a good singer with a real voice and a nice personality.

I am only eighth grade but I will always like pop music.

I play the piano.

My mom is good at piano, too.

My brother wants to be a pianist and a doctor when he grows up.

I’m thinking of fashion designing, but music is better for me.
