Though people should continue to prepare and monitor Hurricane Dorian, its shift east is good news for Florida, said Volusia County Emergency Management Director Jim Judge at a news conference on Saturday, Aug. 31.
“However, we are by no means out of harms way," Judge said.
Dorian is currently a category 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds, and is moving west at 8 mph. Volusia residents should expect 40-50 mph tropical-storm-force winds for 8-12 hours, and could receive gusts from 55-60 mph, Judge said. The county is anticipating 4-8 inches of rain, with about 6-8 inches on the coast, and up to a possible 10-12 inches in low-lying areas.
The storm is still three days out though.
“It’s a slow moving storm," County Manager George Recktenwald said. "It’s days away, so there’s a lot of opportunity for it to shift paths.”
Mandatory evacuations of the beachside, RV and mobile home parks, as well as low-lying areas, have been pushed back to possibly take place on Monday. Shelters will also open at 10 a.m. Monday, and Votran will provide free transportation.
Beach access and ramps will remain open until Sunday. Volusia Schools will close on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Additional school closings will be announced, if necessary, on Monday afternoon.
Staff and limited sandbag supplies are available daily between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Aug. 31 through Sept. 2 at the Nova Community Center, 440 N. Nova Road, and the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, 700 Hull Road (next to ball field five.) Sand will remain after-hours until sundown in both locations, but residents should bring their own shovels and sandbags during non-staffed hours.

Residents need to show proof of residency and can fill their own bags or city supplied bags. Residents should bring a shovel. If residents bring their own bags, please make sure they are small trash bags and are double bagged. There is a limit of 10 bags per household.
Residents living in the unincorporated areas of Volusia County can obtain sand and bags at the following locations today, Aug. 31, beginning at noon. Residents should bring their own shovels and be prepared to fill their own bags.
