The family of the late Michael Elam, Daytona State College's vice president for student development from 2000-2009, has established an endowed scholarship fund with the DSC Foundation, a press release announced.

"Mike was a great mentor, colleague and friend to me," DSC President Dr. Tom LoBasso said in the press release. "As the Elam family continues to grieve his loss, we are grateful that they have extended Michael’s life and legacy by establishing this scholarship.”

Elam served 41 years in higher education. At the time of his death in January, he was president of the Halifax Community College in Weldon, North Carolina. Elam had a bachelor's degree in zoology, a master's in student personnel administration from Howard University, and an educational doctorate in higher educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

Once fully funded, the scholarship will support part-time or full-time students who maintain a 2.5 GPA while pursuing an associate degree or certificate, and, who complete at least 10 hours of community service every semester.

The DSC Foundation will match up to $3,000 in funds raised for the Elam Memorial Scholarship through Jan. 25, 2023. Visit www.Daytonastate.edu/elam or call 386-506-3407. Students interested in applying for the scholarship should visit DaytonaState.edu/Scholarships.
