A foundation has pledged $10,000 in matching funds for all donations received by the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties for backpacks and school supplies for needy schoolchildren.

The Abram and Ray Kaplan Foundation has provided a new $10,000 gift that will match donations raised for the backpack program before school starts Aug. 15, said Gloria Max, executive director of the federation.

"They were inspired by our school supply project and that we've distributed more than 88,000 backpacks over the past 20 years," Max said.

About 7,000 students in Volusia and Flagler counties received backpacks with school supplies last year, and the federation hopes to provide that many again this year. These are given to economically disadvantaged students, regardless of race or religion, in elementary, middle and high schools.

The federation has already raised more than $83,000 toward its goal of $114,000. Donations are tax-deductible. Max said 100 percent of the money will go to purchase backpacks and school supplies because the Federation pays for all administrative costs.

Please send donations to: School Supply Kits, c/o the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties, 470 Andalusia Avenue, Ormond Beach, FL 32174 or call 672-0294 for more information.
