The owners call it the sweetest spot in Florida. A new business in Ormond Beach, Mama Bare Sugaring Studio, offers body hair removal by using sugaring as an alternative to waxing. The ingredients are sugar, lemon and water.

The first Mama Bare Sugaring Studio was opened in Port Orange in 2016 by Amanda Yarbrough. Her mother, Stefanie Gurka, worked with her for a couple years, and has now opened the studio in Ormond Beach at 175 S. Nova Road, Suite 6A.

Gurka said sugaring is a gentle way to remove unwanted hair. Most clients are women, but there are men who want hair removed from the back, shoulders or other areas.

Sugaring started in Persia around 1900 BC.

Café offers breakfast, lunch and pinball

Café One, 403 N. U.S. 1, offers breakfast, lunch … and pinball. The Ormond Beach Chamber Commerce recently helped the owners, Karl and Sanya Strode, celebrate their two-year anniversary with a ribbon cutting.

The café has a separate room to house the pinball machines that Karl Strode has collected over the years for customers to enjoy. Strode said parents enjoy the nostalgia of playing the machines, and it’s a totally new experience for their kids.

The young people put down their tablets or phones for a while and enjoy a real-world experience with the lights, sounds and physical activity of pinball, Strode said.

Strode has been active in pinball all his life, since playing in the arcades at the Daytona Beach Boardwalk as a child. There is large community of pinball players, with tournaments and national rankings. He said pinball almost died out about 20 years ago, but it’s back with new technology.

The Strodes also own Sassy’s World of Ice Cream in the same plaza featuring hand-dipped ice cream.

Strode, a former chef at Alfie’s Restaurant in Ormond-by-the-Sea, said he makes items from scratch and uses premium ingredients.

Stacy’s Buffet escapes wrecking ball

The former Stacey’s Homestyle Buffet, which has been deteriorating at 600 S. Atlantic Ave. for several years, is going to be rebuilt as a surf shop, according to a site plan filed with the city of Ormond Beach.

The owners had been issued a notice of unsafe structure from the city’s building official. The letter gave the owner 30 days to repair or demolish the building, or it would be demolished by the city.

The contractor for the building owner has provided a timeline for partial demolition and improvements to convert it to a surf shop, according to a report by the city manager’s office.

The site plan also calls for landscaping improvements. The property owner is listed as 620 Atlantic Ave. LLC, with an address in Hollywood, Fla.
