Ormond Beach resident and Mainland High School art teacher Marcia Bobbitt’s Empty Bowls dinner event, in December, raised more than $18,000 for Halifax Urban Ministries. A new online auction fundraiser will run through Feb. 10.

The clay bowls have been sold, the auctions finished and the total raised at Mainland High School art teacher Marcia Bobbitt’s fifth-annual Empty Bowls dinner event, in December, have been tallied.
Bobbitt, an Ormond Beach resident, presented a $14,586.19 check to Halifax Urban Ministries Community Relations Director Mark Geallis Friday, Feb. 1, to benefit the organization’s nonprofit food-for-the-hungry initiatives.
More than $14,000, according to Halifax Urban Ministries, is enough to make 2,300 Feed-A-Family bags to help prevent homelessness, provide more than 90,000 hot meals to needy locals or meet all of the needs of 18 families for one month at the STAR Family Shelter, in Daytona Beach.
In just five year’s time, the Empty Bowls event, a partnership between HUM, Volusia County Schools Art Departments and Mainland’s Culinary Arts Institute, has grown to nearly 800 attendees. Participants buy a meal, donated by 15 area restaurants and served in clay bowls made by student artists. There is also a silent auction of items donated by dozens of individuals and businesses.
But Halifax Urban Ministries isn’t done fundraising.
For the first time, the nonprofit is hosting an online auction, in partnership with Ebay Giving Works, to run through Feb. 10.
HUM will receive 100% of buyers’ purchases of donated items, and shipping costs can be waived for locals who pick up their items at HUM, 215 Bay St., Daytona Beach.
More than 30 items are currently up for auction, including art pieces, autographed sports memorabilia, gift cards, clothing and vacations.
