A little rain didn’t hurt the turnout at the Jan. 5 kickoff of the Mayor’s Health & Fitness Challenge. About 250 residents signed up to compete.

Chicken-pushing cows and men in spandex onesies were only part of the surprises found at the Mayor’s Health & Fitness Challenge kickoff event Saturday, Jan. 5, at The Casements.

Despite bad weather, the launch still drew more than 200 residents, all of which snaked through the hallways of The Casements to complete health assessments and learn more about city resources.

“I think there was a bigger turnout than they expected,” participant Beth Kaye explained with a smile, after waiting two hours for her results.

But Mayor Ed Kelley and his team were delighted by the turnout.

“Today you can definitely tell there’s excitement in the air,” said Darlynn Nangano, a volunteer.

All attendees were also given a three-month calendar of different local fitness events, as well as a list of restaurants offering healthy menu items.

“I’m looking forward to a brand new me in 2013,” said Stephanie Parks, another resident.

The final biometric screening will take place April 6. But Mayor Kelley is hoping this push will promote more lasting healthy living.

“We are the recipient of the choices we make,” he said.
