Charles Nelson was out eating Monday night dinner when his phone rang. It was a California number and he was eating, so he didn’t answer.

It was his birthday, and he was out celebrating at Takeya Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar, in Ormond Beach.

But when he finished his steak and shrimp, he called the number back.

On the other end was University of Southern California interim head coach Ed Orgeron, and other coaches, who told Nelson they have seen his tape and they want him to come out to the West Coast for an official visit. They want to offer him a scholarship, too.

“They were talking to me about how they watched my film and how impressive I was,” Nelson said Monday night. “They said I was electric.”

The coaches told Nelson that he could play offense, defense or special teams.

Nelson said he has received about 20 offers already, including Boston College, Duke, Cincinnati, , Georgia Tech, Indiana, South Florida and Wisconsin.
