Jewish Federation doing good deeds

The Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties raised hundreds of dollars in donations for its Jerry Doliner Food Bank and to provide school supplies for children in need at the Jewish Heritage Festival on April 15.

Since the festival fell on Good Deed Day, Gloria Max, executive director of the Jewish Federation, and the other volunteers wore T-shirts acknowledging the date. Together, they raffled prizes at the festival and 100% of the donations will go to provide aid. For the past 22 years, the Jewish Federation has given 105,000 backpacks with school supplies to local children.

Pine Trail Elementary third-grader accepted into National STEM camp

Nine-year-old Caleb Crockett will join other elementary school students across the U.S. at the National Youth Leadership Forum Pathways to STEM program at the University of Florida this summer.

The Pine Trail Elementary third-grader was nominated by his second grade teacher at Belle Terre Elementary due to his passion for technology and knowledge of science, math and English. The NYLF Pathways to STEM is part of the Envision programs that allow students to explore interests and experience learning outside the classroom. According to a press release, the Envision programs have served more than 800,000 students in more than 145 countries since 1985.

Crockett, who is an honor roll student, hopes to pursue a computer science career one day and become a programmer. He is also an avid reader, enjoys playing music and looks forward to meet other kids in the program with similar aspirations.

Residents wanting to learn how to sing in four part harmony are welcome to join the chorus at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays at Tomoka United Methodist Church located at 1000 Old Tomoka Road.
