The Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties might be small, but its impact is significant.
The nonprofit recently raised $32,500 from over 200 area donors to aid the World Jewish Congress Ukraine Humanitarian Relief Effort at Poland's border.
In a letter from Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress, he said that the Jewish Federation's donation "will go a long way to help us ease the suffering of so many within Ukraine and border countries."
"Although your Federation may be relative small, please know that collectively you have made a tremendous impact on our work," Lauder wrote.
A ribbon-cutting celebration for the Veterans Museum and Education Center at Daytona's S. Cornelia Young Memorial Library at 302 Vermont Ave. will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 4. The public is invited to attend.
According to a press release, the museum's relocation occurred after the Daytona Beach City Commission agreed to lease the 3,867-square-foot building to the museum to display its military artifacts, collections, memorabilia and educational materials. Known as the Cornelia Young Memorial Library, the historic building was built in 1916. An expansion was funded in 1930 by Civil War veteran Capt. Charles A. Young, who donated the building to the city in memory of his late wife.
The museum was founded in March 2013 and has had many homes, including a location at 166 Beach St. in downtown Daytona Beach before it relocated to Holly Hill. After the ribbon-cutting celebration, the museum will open to the public Tuesday to Saturday with free admission. Visit VMAEC.org
The Halifax Area Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will present its Outstanding Support to Veterans Award to the Sparton Corportation, of De Leon Springs, at its second annual Outstanding Support to Veterans Award luncheon at the Halifax River Yacht Club on Thursday, May 26.
According to a press release, the award is presented annually to the local area company the chapter feels is making the most significant contribution to veterans and their families. The company designs, develops, tests and produces complex electromechanical maritime systems such as sonobuoys in support of anti-submarine warfare and capabilities that support undersea warfare.
Sparton employs over 50 veterans, some of whom have worked with the manufacturing company for more than two decades. It was recently featured in "Military Makeover: Operation Career," a TV show that premiered on the Lifetime Channel in 2021. The company also participates in the DoD Skillbridge internship program which offers six-month internship opportunities for sailors at the end of their enlistment, with the potential to transition to a full-time position at its conclusion, the press release states.
Additionally, on Veteran's Day every year, Sparton highlights its veterans through internal and external media platoforms and hosts a veterans' luncheon. The company's CEO, Tracy Howard, is a retired Navy submariner.
The Casements Camera Club will present its ninth-annual Spring Exhibit at The Casements in Ormond Beach starting June 2. It will run through June 29.
The exhibit will feature both color and black and white images. The public may come by The Casements, located at 25 Riverside Drive, during gallery hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.
“We encourage the public to come out and view the photos by our group of talented members and vote for their favorite,” said Ans van Beek Torkington, president of the Casements Camera Club, in an announcement. “The image with the most votes earns the ‘Public Choice’ ribbon, a very coveted award. Votes will be accepted June 2nd through the 20th.”
