In football — at the high school, college or at professional level — kickers, punters and special teams players typically don’t get the credit they deserve. But many times, those very players can make the difference between a win and a loss, a championship or a heartbreaker.

And thanks to One On One Kicking, more and more local special teams players are getting trained to be great.

In February, One On One kicking will host the Bud Asher’s Kick Back to Central Florida Clinic, in honor of the former Daytona Beach Mayor and longtime football coach, Bud Asher, who died July 5. He was 88 years old.

Dan Lundy, special teams coordinator at Mainland High School and director of kicking for One On One Kicking, played for Asher at Mainland High School.

“I think it’s going to be a real special event,” Lundy said this week. “I made a promise that I’d keep his name around the community, and I want people to remember him.”

The event, which will be free to all Central Florida youth football players ages 8-15, will take place Feb. 9, at Mainland High School. The clinic will feature two sessions, lunch and a question-and-answer session.

Players will learn the fundamentals of kicking, punting and long snapping.

And there will be some household collegiate and professional names teaching aspiring players, too.

Most notably, Miami Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis, who attended St. Augustine High School and kicked for the University of Florida, will be there. Mike McCabe, director of punting for One On One Kicking and former member of the Chicago Bears, will also be there. Other staffers include Nate Freese (Boston College), Cairo Santos (Tulane University), Tony Bugeja (Pittsburg Steelers, Methodist University and Father Lopez), Luke Gaddis (Stony Brook University), Adam Shreiner (Elon University), Dawsom Zimmerman (Atlanta Falcons and Clemson University), Paul Layton (Temple University), Trevor Harman (Boise State), Joey Lippo (Temple University) and Marlin Athearn (The Citadel).

“This staff is going to be pretty cool,” Lundy said. “It’s a pretty neat deal. I’m going to have a lot of very qualified people volunteering their time, so I want to make sure everyone in the community is aware of this.”

The registration deadline is Jan. 24, 2014. Register by emailing Dan Lundy, at [email protected].
